The
hedgerow hop variety S24 (nicknamed Ros) has now been officially
named as Pilot and has gone forward for European plant variety rights.
At a presentation ceremony during the SIBA south-west Annual Beer
Festival at Tuckers Maltings, Newton Abbot, Steve Wilmott of The
Dog House Brewery, Scorrier, Nr Redruth received a representation
from Paul Corbett of Charles Faram and Co Ltd, and Peter Darby of
HRI-Wye. Steve came up with the name for the competition held at
The Hop Forum and Training Day organised by Farams, Peter Davies,
Western Quality and Hawkbrand Hops.
From over 100 entries, Peter Darby (who bred the variety) selected
the name Pilot. The variety was selected for commercial production
after excellent results in trials. It is Wilt resistant, has good
aroma and alpha properties (9-11%) and yields as well as conventional
tall varieties, which is excellent for a hedgerow variety. Steve
has already used Pilot in one of his brews; Loyal Corgi a 4.5% Premium
Bitter which has gone down very well. His customers report that
it has "flown" out of the door and several repeat brews
have had to be hastily arranged. |
